Muntu speaks on calls for him, Tumukunde to quit race for civilian opposition candidates

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has opened up on suggestions for him and fellow bush war general Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde to leave the presidential race for civilian politicians.

The 2021 presidential race has attracted 11 candidates, including three 1981-86 National Resistance Army (NRA) ex-fighters.

Muntu and Tumukunde fought with incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.

Muntu served as army commander while Tumukunde’s last deployment was security minister.

On his campaign trail, Muntu says he has been asked by some to quit the race in favour of a civilian candidate.

This question was raised during a meeting Muntu held in Kiwoko in Nakaseke District on December 01.

Muntu used the history of Uganda’s presidenta to explain why there was no guarantee that a civilian president would necessarily do better than military leaders.

“We have had civilian presidents who oppressed the people and generally didn’t govern the country well,” Muntu observed.

“We ask that as you make your decision on January 14, 2021, you choose the leader and team who you see as best suited to bring us to the future that we want for the country, and not because they are civilian or have a military background.”

Muntu has also been assuring Ugandans he would not get drunk on power like Museveni once elected into the country’s top office.
