MP Helen Nakimuli Had Stomach Complications, Says Associate as Questions Remain on Surgery Gone Wrong at Alexandra Medical Centre

Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli drove herself to Alexandra Medical Center in Kampala for a minor surgery but did not make it. And now, Ugandans online are asking for answers to her MP Helen Nakimuli cause of death. An associate says MP Helen Nakimuli had stomach complications.

With a comprehensive report yet to be issued regarding MP Helen Nakimuli cause of death, some people had even started blaming Mulago National Referral Hospital and asking for answers as they alleged negligence in the operating room.

Mulago Hospital has since issued a statement distancing the facility from the surgery during which MP Helen Nakimuli died.

“The Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala did not pass on at Mulago National Referral Hospital as alluded to by NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor,” Mulago, the largest and oldest Government hospital providing varying in-patient and out-patient services, said in a statement.

“Hon. Nakimuli Hellen died at Alexandra Medical Center where she had gone for a surgery and [her body] was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. Kindly disregard this information since it is misleading.”

According to one of Nakimuli’s personal assistants, Nakimuli went in an operation at 12:00 at the health facility located along Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala. But after about three hours, at around 3pm, a doctor came to them and that the patient had not made it back. The doctor reportedly needed a family member.

According toMarvin Saasi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary for Diaspora Affairs Nakimuli “had stomach complications.”

NUP politicians like Kawempe LCV Councillor-elect Dr Shamim Nambassa are demanding for answers on how Helen Nakimuli died.

“It just doesn’t make sense to me  We need answers, what exactly went wrong?” Nambassa asked.

But there were some who were unhappy with those seeking answers, saying they should allow the family an opportunity to mourn the fallen MP. But those demanding answers are insistent.

“Do we have any preliminary findings from Parliament of Uganda on what caused Nakimuli’s surgery to turn fatal? Was it anesthesia, infection, a blood clot, a pre-existing condition, or something else?” asked journalist Culton Scovia Nakamya.

“This is not the time to dismiss those seeking answers. A human life must be accounted for and Hellen was a public leader.”
