There has been some more chaos on the final day of the 12th Democratic Party (DP) national delegates conference at Asamar Hotel in Ruti, Mbarara City.
Voting ended in the morning of June 02, 2025, before vote counting began. DP Electoral Commission Chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo presided over the voting exercise. Voting ran from 10pm of Sunday night and closed at about 5am of Monday, June 2, 2025.
Up to 1,400 delegates cast their votes to choose DP’s top leaders.
But as the vote counting was underway, there was disruption after the owner of the tent that was housing the tally centre came in and told Mutenyo and his colleagues that the time they had paid for to use the tent was over.
After failing to agree with the tent owner, the DP Electoral Commission was left with no option but to relocate to the Asamar Country Resort Main Hall.
But some DP delegates were heard complaining that this disruption could be used to steal votes in favour of Norbert Mao, the reigning Democratic Party (DP) president and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in Museveni’s government.
Security at Asamar Country Resort has also been beefed up. Anti-Mao delegates say his kanyamas and the state security apparatus are being used to intimidate delegates and could be used to rig for Mao.
You can read about yesterday’s chaos where an MP was injured in a scuffle and rushed to hospital, as Mao’s opponent Sebamala was thrown out as reported Here.
Norbert Mao has also defended his relationship with Gen Salim Saleh, Museveni’s brother, accused of funding the opposition party’s delegates conference, as reported Here.
