MORE BURDEN! Your MP Will Now Get More Money to Buy a ‘Honorable’ Car

MORE BURDEN! Your MP Will Now Get More Money to Buy a ‘Honorable’ Car

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa

Each Ugandan MP will now get more money to buy a ‘honorable’ car. The parliamentary elections are behind us and the ‘enjoyment’ by politicians starts.

Each Ugandan MP will not get Shs115 more that he or she got in the 11th Parliament.

See, in the 11th Parliament, each MP was given Shs200m to buy a car. And MPs were free to buy whatever cheap piece of metal they could find on the market and save the rest of the money.

Now, each MP will get Shs315m – which is Shs115m more than the amount that was given out in the 11th parliament.

The money is meant to enable the MPs get cars to ease their movement so that they can do their work.

The figure is contained in the 11th Parliament’s final budget before the newly elected MPs can be sworn in and begin their work

MPs on the House budget committee noted that by providing what they called “reliable and standardized vehicles” would “enhance their mobility, improve service delivery and reduce operational efficiencies.”

In total, Parliament now wants an extra UGX263.937 Billion to buy vehicles for 529 MPs of the 12th Parliament, rent extra office space and also cover insurance costs of lawmakers’ children, parents and spouses.

Remigio Achia, Vice Chairperson, Parliament’s Budget Committee, who made the request as he  presented the report on the 2026-27 National Budget Framework Paper, said that the vehicles are intended to ensure effective, efficient and timely execution of their legislative, oversight and representative functions.

“Members of Parliament are required to travel extensively across constituencies and the country to engage constituents, monitor government programs and participate in Parliamentary related activities,” said Achia.

“Provision of reliable and standardized vehicles will enhance their mobility, improve service delivery and reduce operational inefficiencies. The additional funding of UGX166.8 Billion is requested to facilitate the purchase of vehicles for the Members.”

We hope you as a voter and tax payer understand what that means and that you will see that on ground.

The speaker and deputy speaker’s cars are way more expensive than the ordinary MPs. See how much they cost and the controversy around their expensive cars Here and There.
