The 2025 Urban Refugee Marathon successfully culminated in an awarding ceremony at the President’s Office, where winners received medals and cash prizes.
Held on July 20, 2025, at Old Kampala Secondary School, the marathon attracted around 10,000 participants, including refugees from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, DR Congo, Nigeria, Burundi, alongside Ugandan nationals. The event aimed to foster unity, promote refugee integration, and celebrate inclusion between refugees and host communities.
Hon. Hajjat Sarah Kanyike, Senior Presidential Advisor on Kampala & Metropolitan Affairs, represented Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi, Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs—currently on an official visit to the USA. She highlighted the importance of the refugee community and Uganda’s commitment to hospitality and unity, stating:
“The refugee community is very important to us as Office of President because once you are here, you are our brothers and sisters. My sincere appreciation to all the partners and participants who helped in the preparations that led to a momentous event.”
