Mbarara Businessman Shot Dead by Police Officer

A Mbarara businessman has been shot dead by a police officer. The businessman was shot dead in the night of May 25, 2025, Robert Kanusu, the Mbarara City South Resident City Commissioner (RCC), has confirmed.

Kanusu identified the deceased businessman as Gordon Bogore, who hailed from Kibaya Cell in Nyakayojo Ward.

Bogere had come to Ruti Police Station at about 10pm on Sunday night to bring in a new suspect when he was shot dead.

He lost his life amidst a scuffle as five suspects were attempting to escape from Ruti Police Station. The suspects plan was successful after they overpowered the police officers guarding the entrance to the cell.

Kanusu explained that as the officers on guard were opening for Bogere to bring in a new suspect, the escaping suspects fought with the men in uniform.

It was in this scuffle that Bogere was shot dead. The suspects managed to escape.

The Resident City Commissioner noted that the suspects had previously escaped from detention in Kabale in South Western Uganda, where they had been held for aggravated robbery.

Police in Mbarara City has since arrested and detained the officer who shot Bogere dead.

Mbarara City police says it is now hunting for the five suspects who escaped from detention.
