At least 58 Ugandans have picked presidential nomination forms for the 2021 election in two weeks.
Incumbent president Yoweri Museveni and his four-time Challenger Dr Kizza Besigye are not among the 58.
Although Museveni is his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer, Besigye has declared he won’t stand in next year’s election.
Besigye’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party will choose between chairman Wasswa Birigwa and president Patrick Oboi Amuriat for a flag bearer.
From FDC, the main opposition party, Museveni will face a new opponent.
Other key challengers are Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) candidate Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu, former security minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Tumukunde and singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Also sponsored by a political party is Charles Bbale of Ecological Party of Uganda.
The race has so far attracted five women: Elizabeth Lugudde-Katwe, Nancy Kalembe, Maureen Kyalya, Phiona Mirembe and Brenda Katushemererwe.
These are now expected to return the forms after securing 100 seconders from each of the districts that make up at least two thirds of Uganda’s districts.
Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama has encouraged aspirants to return the seconder (supporter) forms at least two weeks before nomination.
