JUST IN: Prof Barnabas Nawangwe Re-Appointed Makerere University Vice Chancellor

Prof Ezra Suruma, the Chancellor of Makerere University, has reappointed Prof Barnabas Nawangwe as Vice Chancellor of Uganda’s largest and oldest higher learning institution for a second five-year term, The Pearl Times has confirmed.

University Secretary (US) Yusuf Kiranda has confirmed the reappointment of Prof Nawangwe, who is expected to leave office in 2027.

In a notice dated August 12, addressed to university staff and students and titled ‘Reappointment of Professor Barnabas Nawangwe as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University,’ US Kiranda spoke of Nawangwe’s ‘distinguished service.’

He added that the reappointment had been made by the Chancellor and that Nawangwe’s second term, which was recommended by the University Council, will take immediate effect.

“Following the provisions of Section 31(4) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended), and on the recommendation of the University Council, the Chancellor has reappointed Professor Barnabas Nawangwe for a second five-year term as ‘Vice Chancellor of Makerere University with immediate effect,” wrote Kiranda.

“We express our deepest gratitude to the Chancellor and the University Council for recognising Professor Nawangwe’s distinguished service and granting him the opportunity to serve another term as we celebrate 100 years. The University community congratulates Professor Nawangwe on this appointment and guarantees continued collaboration and support as Makerere University enters a new century of service to humanity.”

The reappointment of Nawangwe comes at a time when the university is expected to continue to be tough on student politics within the university following the death of a UCU student in guild campaigns. (Read Story Here).
