KAMPALA — First Lady and Minister-designate for Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, is expected to be vetted virtually.
The vetting of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s newly appointed Cabinet enters its second day today, Tuesday, June 2, 2026, having officially commenced on Monday, June 1, 2026.
The Appointments Committee, chaired by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth, is scrutinising dozens of ministers-designate before they can formally assume office.
Former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda claimed that on Monday, committee members rejected a request by Janet Museveni to appear virtually, and that attempts by Oboth Oboth to convince them to allow her be vetted virtually had proven futile.
“Hon Janet Kataha Museveni once again requested to be vetted on zoom but committee members objected. Speaker Oboth-Oboth tried twice to persuade members but failed,” wrote Ssemujju.
“We are waiting to see what happens today; whether they are once again willing to bend the rules to accommodate Museveni family rule.
For the entire five years, 2021-26, Kataha never stepped in parliament!”
Ssemujju’s remarks suggest that the issue of virtual vetting sparked debate within the committee, with some legislators reportedly questioning whether special arrangements should be made for the First Lady.
Janet Museveni was retained by President Museveni as Minister of Education and Sports in the new Cabinet unveiled last week for the 2026–2031 term. The President also retained Vice President Jessica Alupo and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, while making several changes that saw a number of long-serving ministers dropped and new faces brought into government.
Parliament constituted the Appointments Committee last week ahead of the vetting exercise, which began on June 1 and is expected to assess all ministers-designate named by the President before their appointments are approved.
The discussion around Janet Museveni’s appearance comes amid recent concerns about her health. The First Lady has in recent months scaled back some public engagements, prompting speculation about her condition.
