A woman fearlessly came out to expose top government officials stealing money meant for development programs at an event to mark International Women’s Day attended by President Yoweri Museveni, his wife Janet and other top officials.
Betty Mukhaye, who resides in Kyankwanzi and said she recently sat her UCE exams and passed with flying colors, told the president that money meant for government programs aimed at driving people out of poverty was being stolen left right and center.
She talked of the money sent through financial institutions like Centenary Bank (probably the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) Project funds for women entrepreneurs.
Mukhaye, dressed in yellow (the color of Museveni’s ruling NRM party, said the money had been taken by powerful and wealthy businesswomen leaving small scale entrepreneurs cursing.
She also noted that the money meant for Parish Development Model (PDM) had not reached her areas and that officials were mostly enrolling their relatives onto the program instead of well-deserving people desperate to jump out of poverty.
The woman, who also identified herself as a local politician and mobilizer going by the moniker Maama Janet Museveni, singled out constituents represented by some top politicians like Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja as being the only benefiting largely from the government programs.
Museveni asked that Mukhaye’s contact be taken for followup purposes but her testimony seemed to have poured cold on the largely parroted government messages that PDM and GROW were changing lives and driving people out of poverty.
The testimony seemed to confirm that some corrupt officials – including those ‘above’ and, maybe, sitting at the same event, were failing the government programs.
Meanwhile, as The Pearl Times has reported, Museveni’s government will spend Shs200bn next financial year to fight corruption – (please, don’t judge!). See Details Here.
