IDENTIFIED: Police Reveals Names of Eight People Killed in Kassanda Accident

Kassanda accident

Eight people were killed in an accident in Kassanda District. The Kassanda accident happened at Kyakatebe village, about 30km outside Mityana Town.

At least two students were killed in the accident that happened at about 6:40 pm on Sunday, February 08, 2026.

The accident involved a commuter taxi, registration number UBQ 154K, travelling from Kampala to Bunyangabu, and a Link Bus Company bus, registration number UBE 535H.

The eight people died on spot when the commuter taxi rammed into a bus. Several other people were injured.

Earlier, six people had been confirmed dead but police has since revised the death toll from the horrific road accident to eight.

On Monday, February 09, 2026, Wamala regional police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said that two more people succumbed to the injuries they sustained during the collision between the commuter taxi and bus.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the commuter taxi (Toyota Hiace), which was traveling from Mityana, tried to overtake another vehicle, leading to a collision with an oncoming Link Company bus heading to Kampala.

On the list of the deceased are a number of people from Bunyangabu District. The deceased are:

  • Ahurra Rined, aged five from Bunyangabu District
  • Katusiime Esther, aged 15 from Nsakasa in Bunyangabu District.
  • Nankya Anita, aged 34 from Rwimi in Bunyangabu
  • Vumulia Richard, aged 36, from Kasunganyanja in Bunyangabu District.
  • Atuhaire Phiona, aged 39, from Ruti in Mbarara City.
  • Atugonza Janat, aged 40, from Bunyangabu District.
  • Kabaitalya Christine, aged 55, from Bunyangabu District.
  • Tusingwire James from Bunjojo in Bunyangabu District.

The bodies of those who perished in the accident were taken to Kiganda Health Center IV mortuary. Police has called on relatives to go to the facility to identify and collect the bodies.

Meanwhile, at least four injured people are still hospitalized at Mityana Hospital. While one of these has been identified as Robert Muganzi, 38, the others were yet to be identified.

Also, police say the driver of the Link Company bus involved in the accident has been identified as Sulaiman Musota from Muduuma in Mpigi District, but the identity of the driver of the commuter tax who ran away after the accident remains unknown.

Relatedly, a Makerere University student has died in an accident on the way back to campus, as reported Here.
