Norbert Mao
Norbert Mao announced that the Democratic Party (DP) plans to win 50 parliamentary seats in the 12th parliament in 2026. Mao won a chaotic election to retain his job as the president general of the Democratic Party at the end of the 12th National Delegates Conference held at Asamar Hotel in Ruti, Mbarara City on June 02, 2025.
The justice and constitutional affairs minister got 969 votes, coming ahead of Buikwe South MP Dr Micheal Lulume Bayiga with 339 votes, and Elia Alitia with 52 votes, according to results announced by Kennedy Mutenyu about 10 minutes before 8pm on Monday, June 02, 2025.
Uganda’s representative to regional parliament, Gerald Siranda, got 870 votes against Ismael Kirya’s 312 votes to keep his secretary general role.
Mukasa Mbidde was unopposed for the position of deputy president general, while Babirye Kabanda kept her job as treasurer.
DP Electoral Commission’s Mutenyu listed problems faced during the delegates conference, “including attempts to attack us” over allegations by “those who thought we have sold the party.”
Norbert Mao said he had been “surrounded by my enemies” and talked of the burden of carrying “DP on my shoulders.”
He also announced the ambitious plan to ensure that DP has 50 MPs in parliament, which could easily make it the biggest opposition party or at least one that gives Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) a run for its money.
It should be remembered that the DP Electoral Commission disqualified Richard Sebamala who had planned to challenge Norbert Mao. The commission said Sebamala had failed to prove that he had been an active DP member for 10 years.
As police threw out Sebamala, there was chaos in which an MP was injured and rushed to hospital, as reported Here.
There was also chaos during vote counting as the venue owner chased delegates from the tent over money, as reported Here.
