Days Ago, Another MP Was Imprisoned for Failure to Clear Loan
Another Ugandan Member of Parliament (MP) has been sent to prison after reportedly failing to clear a debt he secured from money lenders.
Dr Patrick Lodoi Mutono, the Butebo County MP, is said to have borrowed the money from a yet to be identified money lender but failed to clear the loan and its interest as agreed.
It is said that around 2021, Mutono got a loan of about Shs100m to finance his campaign for the Butebo County parliamentary election.
Mutono was the official candidate of President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
But he reportedly failed to pay the money and that its principle sum and interest have accumulated to about Shs300m.
The arrest of Dr Mutono happened on Friday, June 23. Bailiffs, working with security officers in plain clothes, are said to have arrested the honorable MP and delivered him to a court in the eastern Ugandan city of Mbale.
Court then jailed the legislator for up to six months. If he fails to clear the debt, he will be confined to Walukhu Government Prison for six months.
This is the second MP to be jailed after failing to pay a debt. About a week earlier, another MP was sentenced to six months imprisonment after failing to pay money lenders. This MP defeated a Museveni minister in the 2021 parliamentary elections. (See Details Here).
