Uganda’s government, through the Ministry of Health, has explained the current Covid19 situation in the country after cases were reported recently in the oil-rich district of Buliisa.
Director general of health services in the Ministry of Health Dr Charles Olaro said the Covid19 situation in the country remained stable and that there has been no major outbreak for at least three years now.
Dr Olaro also cautioned Ugandans against old media being shared again to cause panic in the wake of cases reported in Buliisa.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to clarify recent media reports suggesting a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the country. The circulating messages are old clips being re-shared by unscrupulous individuals to mislead the members of the public,” said Olaro.
“The Ministry reassures the public that there is no resurgence of COVID-19 in Uganda, and the national situation remains stable and fully under control, since the end of the major COVID-19 outbreak three years ago.”
The director general of health services did not confirm any cases of the new more lethal Covid19 strains that had been rumored as having been reported in Uganda.
“The Ministry has consistently monitored trends to ensure early detection and prompt response,” he noted.
“The Ministry continues to monitor information about new strains of COVID-19 being reported in various parts of the world and working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued safety of the population.”
He went on to say that Uganda had the capacity to detect any such new strains and to contain outbreaks if they occurred.
“Uganda continues to benefit from a strong surveillance and response system, which has been built over time and remains fully active and capable of detecting and addressing public health threats,” he added.
The ministry has now urged Ugandans to report to health facilities if they present with symptoms of Covid19, reminding them of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that characterized the Covid19 pandemic that shook the world.
“If anyone exhibits flu-like symptoms consistent with COVID-19, please visit the nearest health facility for appropriate treatment and management,” Dr Olaro advised.
“The Ministry remains committed to protecting the health and well-being of all Ugandans, and encourages the public to maintain good hygiene practices including washing your hands with clean water and soap or using an alcohol based sanitizer and remain alert to credible updates from official sources.”
