New details are emerging on Mezo Noir bar incident that led to the closure of the Kololo-based hangout.
Mezo Noir Bar management announced the temporary closure of the bar following incident in which a woman identified as Martha is said to have collapsed after taking drinks.
Martha was rushed to hospital. While many thought that she had been declared dead, Kampala Hospital where she has been admitted for many hours is yet to pronounce her dead.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango has been quoted as telling Daily Monitor in an interview that Martha was brain dead but other body organs were working and that she was still on life support.
“They rushed the victim to Kampala Hospital, where she was put on life support,” Onyango said.
“The doctors at the hospital have not yet pronounced the victim dead. Reports from the doctors indicate that she is still on life support system, her brain is dead but other organs are still functioning.”

Martha was later pronounced dead.
In the same interview, Onyango revealed that Martha had met her friend named Edward Mugabo who is a cashier at Mezo Noir and that the two friends had had drinks for about an hour and a half.
That it was when Martha and Mugabo moved to the cashier’s office that the woman (Martha) collapsed. There are no CCTV cameras in the manager’s office.
This forced Mugabo to inform his brother named Joseph Kalenzi who is said to have helped him to take Martha to Kampala Hospital.
“The victim only identified as Martha met her friend, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the bar, at 2am, and they drank together until 3:30am,” Onyango further noted.
“When they moved to the manager’s office which has no CCTV cameras, the victim reportedly collapsed in the office. Mugabo notified his brother, Joseph Kalenzi. They [Mugabo and Kalenzi] rushed the victim to Kampala Hospital…”
Mugabo and Kalenzi, brothers, remain in detention at Kira Road Police Station. You can read our earlier story on the shutdown of Mezo Noir Here.
