Former Ugandan Supreme Court Judge Dead

A former Ugandan Supreme Court judge has died in Kampala after being sick for some time. Retired Justice Augustine Nshimye breathed his last on Friday, 03 April 2026.

Augustine Nshimye is said to have been battling with cancer-related complications. Nshimye was well known in the judiciary and in the politics.

In the judiciary, Nshimye rose through the ranks from the role of a senior clerk to the Supreme Court, the highest temple of justice in the land.

He would serve as deputy registrar for about two years between 1986 and 1988, after which he returned to private legal practice.

In 2008, Nshimye was appointed a justice of the Court of Appeal, which doubles as the Constitutional Court of Uganda.

Two years later in 2010, Nshimye was appointed an acting judge of the Supreme Court, and a substantive judge of the highest court in the land in 2015. He would serve for two years before he retired after turning 70 in 2017 but was handed another two years post-retirement. He also served as inspector of courts of Uganda.

Politically, Augustine Nshimye was among the brains behind the formation of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as it is today, which morphed from the bush war group National Resistance Army (NRA).

He would serve represent the people of Mityana South constituency as a Member of Parliament between 1988 and 2008.

President Yoweri Museveni would also appoint Augustine Nshimye to his cabinet where he served as the Minister for Regional Cooperation.

Months ago, Uganda lost another former Supreme Court judge, while days ago, it lost a former minister, as detailed Here and There.
