Parliament has spoken on reports of Shs100m Reportedly Paid to Each MP for Passing Coffee Bill. The money, being referred to as part of Parliament Easter Cash Bonanza, was reportedly received by both opposition and ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs.
Reports suggest that a group of opposition MPs received their money from a different office from the one in which NRM MPs went to pick theirs.
The purpose of the said money was not clear. While some suggested that the money was meant for community mobilization for government development programs, others claimed that the money was meant to be a reward to the MPs who voted in favour of the controversial coffee bill.
But parliament has dismissed the claims of each MP being paid Shs100m, noting that official payment channels had not processed such money. (Who processes questionable payments through official channels?).
That as far as parliament is concerned, clerk Adolf Mwesige had not processed such payments.
“There are claims on social media regarding alleged payments of Shs100m to MPs,” Parliament noted.
“The public is advised that Parliament makes statutory payments to MPs processed by the Clerk to Parliament and reflected on their individual payslips. The Clerk has not processed any such payments.”
Its Director of Communication and Public Affairs Chris Obore said the claims were mere propaganda.
“Ignore rumors that MPs have been paid Shs100m for passing the Coffee Bill. Whoever is alleging should respect the public by providing evidence other than propaganda,” he said.
“MPs receive statutory payments through Clerk to Parliament and by way of a payslip. The rest is recycled propaganda.”
