The National Electoral Commission (EC) has finally cleared Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine for presidential nominations due next week.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Kyagulanyi saw his endorsement signatures accepted by EC after thorough verification on Wednesday together with independent candidate Willy Mayambara.
The EC Spokesperson Paul Bukenya said Kyagulanyi joined the list of other eight aspiring presidential candidates that had been earlier given allowed for nominations.
Bukenya said of the 87 aspirants who picked up nomination forms, only 22 have handed in voters endorsement signatures for verification. EC expects more aspirants to be cleared as the verification process is still ongoing.
Bukenya said EC is guided by the presidential Elections Act where presidential aspirants are required to collect at least 100 voter’s endorsement signatures per district from the two thirds of 146 districts of Uganda as a condition to their nomination.
On Monday, EC had accepted endorsement papers for Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the National Alliance for Transformation (ANT) Maj Gen Gregory Mugisha Muntu, Independent candidates John Katumba and Former journalist and preacher Joseph Kabuleta.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of National Resistance Movement (NRM), former security minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, Nancy Linda Kalembe, and Fred Mwesigye, all independents were cleared last week.
The nominations for presidential candidates will take place on November 2 and 3rd at Kyambogo University sports ground.
