EAT OR STARVE TO DEATH: Fearing to be Poisoned, Besigye Refuses Prison Food. Prisons Boss Speaks Out

A delegation from the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) says Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has blocked food items brought to opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye by his family and friends, telling him to either eat prison food (served to inmates or bought from the canteen) or starve to death. Fearing to be poisoned, Besigye is said to have refused prison food.

According to Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, the orders on food for Besigye were just part of the “new orders” that the PFF delegation visiting the veteran opposition leader at Luzira Maximum Prison had learnt during their visit on January 17.

Nyanjura, a staunch Besigye supporter who was part of the PFF delegation, further notes that they were told that the 68-year-old leader could buy all the food items he needed at the prison canteen.

Yet, she continued, Besigye has made it clear to his comrades that he does not trust the food sold at the prison canteen.

That Dr Besigye told the delegation that he will not eat the prison canteen food, meaning that he may die before the date of hanging as announced via the now disappeared X account of first son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“Dr [Kizza Besigye] has been given two choices, to either eat prison food or starve. All the food items we carried for him were rejected, we were told that [maize flour], milk, millet flour, honey, cooking oil, rice, blue band etc are sold at the prison canteen,” wrote Nyanjura.

“Dr [Besigye] said he won’t eat their canteen food.  He doesn’t trust it. He remarked and said probably he will starve to death and die before the date set by Muhoozi.”

Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine has dismissed the claims by Nyanjura. Baine said the allegations were similar to the ones Nyanjura made about Besigye lawyer Eron Kiiza’s health condition.

“Those are fake allegations. Nyanjura went to Kitalya Prisons and said we had isolated
Eron Kiiza. When she saw the public was not picking interest in her now, she went for Besigye,” Baine was quoted by the government owned The New Vision newspaper as saying.

Baine told Nyanjura and other activists to leave issues of prison management to UPS. He also said that the veteran leader gets about 20 visitors everyday and that all of these bring him food, meaning he has enough.

“They should leave the management of prisons to prisons. The food Besigye eats must be
prepared from the prison. Even if you bring the food, if we are not sure of the source, we have to
put it aside,” he added.

A few days ago, Gen Muhoozi revealed plans to hang Dr Besigye. Hours later he said he had changed the Besigye hanging date. (See Details Here, There and Over There).

Meanwhile, Besigye’s wife Winnie Byanyima has revealed what she will do if Muhoozi and his father Museveni decide to hang her husband. (See Details Here).
