DON’T SAY I DIDN’T TELL YOU! Bobi Wine Warns UPDF Officers after Gen Peter Elwelu Sanctions

Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of Uganda’s main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has warned army officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) after the US government issued sanctions against Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, a former commander.

Until a few months ago, Lt Gen Elwelu was a powerful commander in the Ugandan military, holding the position of the deputy chief of defence forces (D-CDF).

But President Yoweri Museveni fired him from his powerful position (See Details Here).

On May 30, the US issued sanctions against Gen Elwelu and other current and former Ugandan officials over corruption and human rights violations. In particular, Gen Elwelu’s woes emanated from his role in the attacks on the Rwenzururu Kingdom palace where about 100 people were killed by security forces. (See Details Here).

Following the sanctions, Deputy Army spokesperson Col Deo Akiiki said, “these sanctions affect Gen Elwelu as an individual and, therefore, they are of no consequence to the institution of the UPDF [and] indeed to the country.”

Bobi Wine rode on that to warn the UPDF officers that they will be held accountable for their mistakes.

“Dear armed officers, here is proof that once the tables turn against you for executing your Commanders’ unlawful orders, those same Commanders will be the first ones to give you up! In this video, the UPDF Spokesperson says that the sanctions against Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu are his personal problem, and do not affect the UPDF!” wrote Bobi Wine.

“Each day, you have a choice to serve the people of Uganda or to observe Gen. Museveni’s unlawful orders and deal with the consequences individually.”

After his sacking, Gen Elwelu and his boss were consoled with some positions in Museveni’s government. (See Details Here).
