Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has spoken out on the death by suicide of UPDF engineer Lt Amon Ariho.
Lt Ariho left behind a note accusing his boss Maj George Ogwang of the Central Region UPDF Engineering Brigade of poorly running the unit.
In a statement, the UPDF said Ariho should have used the right mechanisms of resolving the issues that led him to commit suicide. But the army promised to deal with whoever would be found responsible for making Ariho reach the level of taking his own life.
“This is very regrettable given the fact that there are established channels to handle individual and collective challenges in the institution,” the UPDF said in a statement.
“The CDF assures the public that the UPDF will carry out a thorough investigation and whoever shall be found culpable will be brought to book.
“We appreciate that individuals do not have equal or similar skills to handle challenges, therefore we encourage our personnel to always seek administrative and professional help using our established structures.”
In a separate statement on his official account on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba said Lt Ariho had died because of corruption. He promised to make the thieves pay for their sins.
“I am personally hurt by the suicide of our young officer… Lt. Ariho. He died because of the corruption Mzee and I have been talking about for a long time now,” wrote Muhoozi. “His blood will be avenged and the thieves will pay.”
