Parliament of Uganda has confirmed that it has received Shs1.2bn meant to facilitate late speaker Jacob Oulanyah’s burial.
The money was released by Matia Kasaija’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Speaker Oulanyah was pronounced dead on March 20. (Read Story Here).
Oulanyah’s body was returned on April 01 amidst tears at the Entebbe International Airport. (Read Story Here).
President Museveni’s government had announced a ‘big budget’ for Oulanyah’s burial. (Read Story Here).
But this was later reduced by about a half. (Read Story Here).
Last Friday, Chris Obore, the director of communication and public affairs at parliament, complained that the money was yet to be released to parliament.
As we reported recently, Speaker Anita Among used her money to facilitate the return of Oulanyah’s body to Uganda, and to buy mourning clothes for family members. (Read Story Here).
Now, Obore has confirmed that the money meant to facilitate the funeral of Oulanyah was sent to Parliament’s account April 04 evening.
“I can now confirm that Finance Ministry has released shs1.2bn to Parliamentary Commission for burial arrangements of late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah,” said Obore.
“The Commission will work with NOC [National Organizing Committtee] to ensure decent sendoff.”
