Chris Obore and Other Senior Parliament Officials Arrested for ‘Stealing’ Billions of Money

KAMPALA — The Head of Communications at the Parliament of Uganda, Chris Obore, and several senior parliamentary officials have been arrested and detained at the offices of the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) as part of a major anti-corruption operation targeting the alleged embezzlement of billions of shillings.

The officials are expected to be arraigned in court on charges linked to the alleged misappropriation of public funds.

According to information obtained by The Pearl Times, Obore, who serves as Parliament’s Director of Communications, is expected to face charges over the alleged embezzlement of Shs5.2 billion.

Also in custody is Parliament’s Director of Human Resource Management, Daniel Adilo, who is reportedly accused of embezzling Shs14.6 billion, the largest amount among those under investigation.

Other officials detained at the IGG offices include Leonard Okema, who allegedly embezzled Shs3.48 billion; Rajab Kaya’s former Principal Private Secretary, who is expected to face charges involving Shs2.17 billion; Okwi Emmanuel Emuron, accused of embezzling Shs1.1 billion; Stella Itute, who allegedly misappropriated Shs75 million; and Vincent Oteba, who is expected to answer charges relating to Shs5.2 billion.

Sources indicate that at least six other male members of staff are also being held at the IGG offices as investigations continue.

The arrests mark one of the most significant anti-corruption operations involving Parliament officials in recent years and come amid increased public scrutiny over the management of public resources within government institutions.

By the time of publication, the Inspectorate of Government had not yet issued an official statement detailing the specific charges or the circumstances surrounding the arrests. The suspects are expected to appear before court once the processing of the cases is completed.

The developments are likely to intensify debate over accountability and financial management within Uganda’s Parliament as the criminal proceedings begin.

It should be remembered that Obore had gone into hiding after her former boss and ally Anita Among was placed under house arrest and her homes searched.

A new administration has since taken over at parliament. Incumbent speaker Jacob Oboth Oboth has complained about people trying to bewitch him, even as he promises to rid parliament of corruption. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
