Chaos as MP Candidate Narrowly Survives Being Killed after Rival Camp Stoned His Car

Suspects Detained as Investigations Continue

An MP candidate narrowly survived being killed in Western Uganda after supporters of a rival camp reportedly stoned his car.

The chaos, The Pearl Times has learnt, broke out in Bushenyi District at a campaign rally of Boniface Tugume in Katimba Village of Rushinya Parish in Kakanju Parish.

Tugume is seeking the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for the Igara West seat currently held by Gaffa Mbwatekamwa.

The Pearl Times’ 2026 Elections Editor says the Igara West NRM primary race is promising to be one of the tightest, with the ground said to be shifting quickly ahead of next week’s polls.

Besides Tugume, other candidates include Jacob Mwije Kakiyagara, Cohen Amanya Kyampene, Mackline Asiimire Baryeija Kahimbi, Paul Kahiigi and Dan Nimwesiga.

The chaos, reported on July 11, happened between the Tugume team and supporters of Amanya Kyampene, the two leading candidates, according to The Pearl Times’ 2026 Elections Editor following up on the parliamentary races across the country.

It all started when supporters believed to belong to Amanya Kyampene’s camp hurled stones at a Mercedes-Benz ML Class, registration number UBQ 415C, belonging to Tugume. Amanya Kyampene is from Kakanju Sub County.

The stones shattered Tugume’s trunk door glass.

Tugume’s camp claims that those who threw stones at the vehicle did so with instructions from Amanya Kyampene.

At least three suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack on Tugume’s vehicle. They have been identified as Loyce Komujuni, 38; Mark Twinomujuni, 20; and Ezra Tugume, 32.

The MK group endorsed Tugume to unseat Mbwatekamwa as early as 2024. Mbwatekamwa has since joined the Mbarara mayoral race where he is often engaged in a war of words with incumbent mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
