President Yoweri Museveni has suggested that negligence is to partly behave for the September 20 early morning fire that gutted the Makerere University Main Building.
Speaking during from State House Nakasero where he delivered his 20th Coronavirus address, Museveni said he was “sorry about the fire which was in the building of Makerere.”
“We don’t know how the fire started but we already have some cases of negligence. I’m sure the vice chancellor will do something about negligence,” he added.

Hours earlier, Museveni’s wife and education minister Janet Museveni visited the scene of the fire.
“This is tragic, not just for the university but the country,” she said after her visit.
“For us who believe in God, we know that everything works out for our good. This is a chance for Makerere to be rebuilt, not just buildings but the culture, the morals of the people and everything that pertains to our prestigious university.”
Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe talked of rebuilding the country’s oldest and largest university in the shortest possible time.
“It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible,” he said.
Prof Nawangwe also assured stakeholders all documents had been digitalized.
“The fire at our Main Building was a very big tragedy. However, I would like to assure all our alumni, staff, students, and General public that ALL our records past and current; Human Resource, student, Academic and financial records are ALL safely stored in digital form.”
