In recent days, some citizens have been sharing a map of Uganda showing the name Buganda removed and replaced with Central yet other sub regions like Busoga, Ankole, Kigezi, Acholi and Bunyoro have remained. As this issue rages, The Pearl Times shares the following flash back on when Museveni Government Apologized to Kabaka for Removing Buganda from Map of Uganda.
The year was 2018. And then Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Ben Mungyereza and the bureau’s board members drove to Bulange Mengo to offer an apology to the Kabaka of Buganda and the entire kingdom through monarchy Prime Minister Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga.
Before that meeting, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi had observed that UBOS had split Buganda into two – North Central and South Central – and removed the name Buganda off the map of Uganda.
At an event that year, the Kabaka had wondered what was the motive of removing the name Buganda from the map of Uganda yet other sub regions (most of them kingdoms and chiefdoms) had retained their names.
After the closed door meeting that lasted over an hour, Dr Mungereza said the two parties had successfully resolved to start using the names Buganda South and Buganda North.
Mungyereza added that UBOS had used North Central and South Central to make data gathering and analysis easier for the bureau’s staff.
