Uganda’s medicines and health products regulator National Drug Authority (NDA) has notified – not approved – Covid19 herbal treatment medicine Covidex for emergency use.
“Today, June 29, 2021 NDA has notified Covidex as a supportive treatment in management of viral infections and can now be accessed in all licensed drug outs. Please avoid self medication and take this and other drugs on the advice of a professional health worker,” the regulator said.
According to NDA, Covidex developer has made it clear to them the herbal drug does not cure Covid19, but is a supportive treatment for the management of viral infections.
Innovator Prof Patrick Engeu Ogwang of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Must) applied for NDA notification following a warning by the regulator to the public to desist from use of Covidex as a Covid19 cure.
Three days later, NDA sent responses to Prof Ogwang and his Jena Herbals U Ltd after scientific assessments.
“NDA has granted Covidex an approval based on initial assessment, published literature and safety studies conducted by the Innovator,” the regulator said.
“The product has been formulated from herbal plants that have been traditionally used to alleviate symptoms of several diseases.”
