BREAKING: Ugandan Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei Dead

Rebecca Cheptegei, the Ugandan long-distance and marathon runner, has passed on, the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has announced. She died on the morning of September 5, 2024, according to the UAF.

Rebecca Cheptegei was one of Uganda’s athletes who participated in the recently concluded Paris Olympics.

She passed on at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. She had been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with severe burns.

It is alleged that Rebecca Cheptegei’s boyfriend had doused her with petrol before setting her on fire.

The burns that Rebecca Cheptegei sustained from the petrol fire were said to be 80 per cent. The Uganda Athletics Federation condemned the act of domestic violence meted on the Ugandan long-distance and marathon runner.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” UAF said in a short announcement.

“As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”
