Former prime minister Dr Livingstone Ruhakana Rugunda has spoken out on reports that he plans to run for president in 2026.

In his cabinet reshuffle a few months ago, Museveni replaced Dr Rugunda with Kakumiro District Woman MP Robinah Nabbanja as prime minister.

Museveni appointed Rugunda his special envoy for special duties in the office of the president.

There have been reports by some Ugandans urging Rugunda to stand for president in 2026, whether President Museveni is on the ballot paper or not.

But Rugunda has made it clear he will not stand for president.

“I have read social media postings and suggestions that I should run for President in 2026,” noted Rugunda.

“I would like to make it known that I have no such intentions or plans.”

If Rugunda stood against Museveni in 2026, he would be the second consecutive former prime minister to do so after John Patrick Amama Mbabazi.

Mbabazi, who Rugunda replaced as premier, stood against Museveni in the 2016 presidential election and lost miserably.
