Bobi Wine’s Comrade Detained in Zimbabwe

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine’s comrade has been detained in Zimbabwe. Bobi Wine, the Ugandan opposition leader, has expressed solidarity with his comrade Tendai Biti, a human rights lawyer and politician in Zimbabwe, who was detained alongside other freedom fighters for resisting attempts to extend the presidential term to seven years and restrict the election of the President to members of Parliament only.

“Biti was speaking out strongly condemning our brutal persecution by the Museveni regime following the sham Jan. 2026 election,” Bobi Wine wrote.

“Unfortunately, as I type this, he has joined the long list of comrades in Africa unfairly detained by their governments for seeking freedom.”

Bobi Wine condemned the arrest, calling it a “cowardly attack on all citizens of Zimbabwe by a regime that cannot sustain open debate about their future without resorting to brute force.” He demanded Biti’s immediate, unconditional release, along with his detained colleagues.

“The people of Zimbabwe deserve freedom, and leaders chosen by them,” Bobi Wine said. “The struggle continues!”

Biti’s arrest has sparked concerns about the shrinking democratic space in Zimbabwe, echoing similar moves by the Museveni regime in Uganda. Bobi Wine’s statement highlights the solidarity among African opposition leaders fighting for democracy and human rights.

Bobi Wine is currently in the US for his international engagements, which have sparked debate back home in Uganda, as reported Here and There.
