Bobi Wine Buganda vote: Katikkiro Mayiga dismisses reports of Mengo crisis meeting over relationship with Museveni

Buganda Kingdom prime minister (Katikkiro) Charles Peter Mayiga has distanced himself from a statement claiming a crisis meeting had been held to discuss a way forward on resolving the standoff between Mengo and the central government over National Unity Platform (NUP).

NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine swept votes from his home Buganda sub-region, and his party won several parliamentary seats in the area.

Incumbent President and election winner Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni rushed to blamed his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s loss to sectarianism.

But Mengo and NUP wondered why it would be sectarianism when Baganda vote a fellow Muganda yet it would seem normal for the Banyankore to vote Museveni, their own.

Days ago, a statement that circulated on February 10 and attributed to Mayiga had claimed that a crisis meeting had taken place in Mengo the same day to discuss the frosty relationship between the kingdom and the Museveni administration.

In the impugned statement, Mayiga had reportedly said he had no regrets that Baganda had voted Bobi Wine and NUP as they sought to bring Buganda to the top, but was worried of the impression that NUP and Mengo were one and the same.

Mayiga has since dismissed the statement attributed to him, but did neither denied nor confirmed that a crisis meeting to discuss the Mengo-Central government standoff happened.

“This [statement] was never issued by me. Please disregard it,” the Katikkiro responded via Twitter.
