In what some in the opposition are already terming ‘betrayal in the struggle,’ Besigye boy Nelson Nkwene Nuwahereza has endorses deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the Ruhinda North MP seat.
The Pearl Times has learnt that Nkwene, who is doing his doctorate at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has pulled out of the Ruhinda North MP race, and asked his supporters to back Tayebwa.
Nkwene stood against Tayebwa in the 2021 Ruhinda North MP election on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket but lost the poll.
In the runup to the election, Nkwene wrote at a book which Dr Besigye gladly promoted.
“A young man Nelson Nkwene authored a book ‘UGANDA WITHOUT MUSEVENI: Museveni’s Quest for Power, Who Pays the Price.’ The book is a call to move away from indifference towards active discontent as Ugandans fight oppression,” Besigye of Nkwene and his book.
But as bedbugs give Besigye sleepless nights in Luzira Prison, Nkwene is embracing the very regime and party he criticizes in his ‘book.’
In a note to the people of Ruhinda North, Nelson Nkwene Nuwahereza announced his endorsement of incumbent MP Thomas Tayebwa.
“In 2021, I offered myself to serve you as Member of Parliament—not for personal gain, but to pursue
meaningful change: better schools, stronger healthcare, improved livelihoods, and dignity for our
communities,” said Nkwene, who hails from Rushebeya, Busheregyenyi in Bitereko of Mitooma District
“My campaign was grounded in the four fundamental duties of a Member of Parliament: making laws that safeguard our future, representing our voices at the national level, overseeing public funds, and holding institutions accountable. These duties remain close to my heart.”
He then saluted Tayebwa for work well done as MP and made it clear that the deputy speaker was the right man to keep steering Ruhinda North to greater heights.
“However, today, I acknowledge and appreciate that Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, our current MP, now serves in the elevated role of Deputy Speaker of Parliament. This position not only allows him to fulfill the core responsibilities of an MP, but also empowers him to guide national legislation, influence critical decisions on matters that affect us directly,” he further said.
“Indeed, we are already witnessing progress. Essential infrastructure projects are gaining momentum, access
to finance and financial literacy has improved. priority health and education initiatives are being heard in
the constituency. His stewardship is bearing fruits.”
(The Pearl Times wonders what Nkwene now thinks of his previous comments on regional imbalances if his premise for supporting Tayebwa is his leverage given his deputy speaker job — what would he tell other people whose constituencies have no minister or such high profile people to get them something from the table at which the national cake is served?)
Nkwene has also announced that he will not challenge Tayebwa in 2026.
“It is for this reason that | have made this radical decision: I WILL NOT BE RUNNING IN THE FORTHCOMING PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS. I ENDORSE HON. THOMAS TAYEBWA, DEPUTY SPEAKER, FOR ANOTHER TERM
(2026-2031),” he further announced.
“This is not a retreat; it is a recognition that leadership must serve the people—not personal ambition. Let us
unite behind Hon. Tayebwa so he can continue the work we all began, With his current mandate and your continued support, Ruhinda North can achieve even greater transformation. Together, we can move forward in harmony, not division.”
Meanwhile, Tayebwa’s boss Speaker Anita Among over a ‘suspicious’ process that led to the disqualification of her opponent in the Bukedea Woman MP race, as reported Here.
