Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has advised main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) to buy a bullet proof jacket and a gas mask after police splashed teargas directly at him during his December 16 campaign meeting in Namayingo District.
On December 16, police in Namayingo hurled a teargas grenade towards Amuriat, splashing him with teargas.
Images captured by reporters on the presidential candidate’s campaign trail show Amuriat in cloud of smoke.
Namayingo District Police Commander (DPC) Apollo Tayebwa instructed his men to disperse Amuriat’s rally at Nsono Trading Centre in Buyinja Sub County.
The pictures and videos from the event have shaken Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate – and perhaps the poster child of police brutality for the past two decades.
Besigye observed that “what Uganda’s ‘opposition’ presidential candidates go through to campaign is scary!”
He noted that teargas had become “a daily affair along the campaign trail” for Amuriat and others opposed to Museveni.
Besigye suggested “a bulletproof vest and gas mask may become standard” for Amuriat and all Museveni’s opponets.
Already, candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP) dons a bulletproof jacket for his campaigns.
He even wore the same for a recent meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC).
