Baltasar Ebang Engonga Avomo,
Baltasar Ebang Engonga Avomo aka Bello, a former head of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency and nephew of Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, has been handed an eight-year jail term and a $220,000 fine over embezzlement.
Months ago, leaked videos thrust Baltasar Ebang Engonga into the spotlight, almost eclipsing his embezzlement charges.
In the Baltasar Ebang Engonga leaked videos, the former National Financial Investigation Agency head featured different women most of whom were legally married or related to powerful and well connected government officials.
The Baltasar Ebang Engonga leaked videos came to light after security operatives and investigators gained access to his mobile phones and computers.
Also known by his nickname Bello, thanks to his supposedly good looks, Baltasar Ebang Engonga – alongside five other officials – faced charges of depositing large amounts of money in secret accounts in the Cayman Islands.
But the accused insisted the money was not embezzled but was rather a sum accumulated in travel allowances.
Baltasar Ebang Engonga leaked videos was largely rumoured to have presidential interests, eyeing the seat held by his uncle Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo since 1982.
Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo appointed his son Teodoro Obiang Mangue as his first vice president in 2016, tightening his succession equation.
Baltasar Ebang Engonga will now spend the next eight years behind bars at the Black Beach Prison, found in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea.
