Last week, all hell broke loose during a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) as former speaker Rebecca Kadaga Alitwala and incumbent Anita Among sought to prove why each was the best candidate for the Second NRM Vice Chairperson position.
Kadaga, a deputy prime minister, occupies the position at the moment, but Among has vowed to dethrone her in this week’s CEC elections.
Kadaga argued that President Museveni, the NRM national chairman, had failed to compel Among to pull out of the race for her, a senior, as he had done for first national vice chairperson Moses Kigongo, a senior member.
But Museveni said claimed he did not have powers to stop anyone standing for any position in CEC, and that doing so would cause more chaos and problems.
He also sought to clear the argument by Kadaga and her camp that Museveni had brought Among to fight her. The president said that he had even struggled to beg his brother Sedrack Nzaire Nowomugisha to pull out of the race.
Kadaga had also argued that she had been loyal to the NRM party since 1989 but Among shot that argument down by reminding her that she had gone against the party’s position to challenge speakership candidate Jacob Oulanyah in 2021 – a bid she lost.
Anita Among touted her mobilization skills as have been beneficial to the party by bragging about fishing MPs from the opposition to the NRM.
Kadaga had also told Museveni that her loss – if it happens this week – would cost him and the NRM in Busoga, making it clear to the president that she thinks an onslaught against her is an onslaught against the Basoga.
But Museveni fired back at Kadaga for thinking that one politician owns or even liberated Busoga. The president bragged about being the one who liberated the Basoga.
As the battle between Kadaga and Among rages on, we revisit a previous report in which the former speaker was warned about being used and dumped like a ngabo condom. (See Details Here).
