Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has been elected NRM Flagbearer for MP Older Persons Eastern Region.
Ofwono Opondo was elected NRM Flagbearer for MP Older Persons Eastern Region during the National Conference of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the capital Kampala.
He defeated incumbent MP for Older Persons Eastern Region Dominic Gidudu Mafabi. Dominic Gidudu Mafabi is the current Minister of State for the Elderly.
The election and endorsement of Ofwono Opondo as flagbearer puts him a step closer to being elected to represent Older Persons of Eastern Region in the 12th Parliament of Uganda.
Ofwono Opondo was declared NRM Flagbearer for MP Older Persons Eastern Region by the NRM Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi.
He will battle it out with independent and other parties’ candidates in the 2026 elections.
Ofwono Opondo resigned his job as government spokesperson months ago to try elective parliamentary politics. He has on some occasions criticized the regime, fearlessly pointing out its mistakes and ills. (See Details Here and There).
The elderly position is among the several Special Interest Groups (SIGs) elections expected at the ongoing delegates’ conference of the NRM.
Meanwhile, there was tension in a recent Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting as former speaker Rebecca Kadaga and incumbent Anita Among tore each other into pieces before Museveni over a CEC position. (See Details Here).
