AGAIN! Another Gateway Bus Involved in Accident; 18 People Injured (See Their Names)

Nearly 18 passengers aboard a Gateway bus sustained serious injuries in an accident that happened in Kisoro District.

About 18 passengers were on the Gateway bus which was travelling from Kampala to Kisoro District in South Western Uganda.

The Tuesday morning accident happened at about 10:50am at Chanakye in Kanaba Sub County of Kisoro District along the Kisoro-Kabale Road, according to local authorities.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate said that preliminary findings indicated that the bus driver was over speeding the white Scania bus registration number UBK 804Y.

Identified as Julius Owoyesigire, aged 40, from Nyabihoko in Ntungamo District, failed to negotiate and lost control of the bus.

“It’s alleged that, the bus was coming from Kabale to Kisoro, with 60 passengers on board. On reaching Chanakye Trading Center, it started sloping Chanakye Red Corner,” noted Maate.

“By the time the driver applied brakes, it was too late and failed to negotiate the corner hence the vehicle overturning sideways, injuring 18 passengers.”

Maate put the exact number of those who sustained injuries at 18, with three of these sustaining serious injuries and the rest minor injuries.

The passengers who sustained injuries were taken to different health facilities in Kisoro District.

The injured included Francis Byarugaba, 46, from Mutorele in Kisoro district; Ketra Muhawenimana, 19, from Bunagana in Kisoro District; Martin Ntezimana, 42, from Bunagana in Kisoro District; Suzan Bonabana, 39, from Kasambya in Mubende District; and Prossy Nakimuri, 38, from Kasambya in Mubende District.

Kisoro officer in charge of traffic ASP Michael Kushaba and other officers documented the scene of crime, and towed the bus to Kisoro Central Police Station for inspection as investigations into the accident continue.
