Tens of politicians are vying for NRM CEC positions. According to the list of successfully vetted NRM CEC Candidates 2025, a number of candidates have withdrawn from their respective races.
The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the ruling party’s sole candidate for both party chairman and presidential flagbearer in the forthcoming elections, the party said in a statement.
CEC, the ruling party continued, also confirmed Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo as the sole candidate for the position of First National Vice Chairman, reinforcing his long-standing role as a pillar of party leadership.
“As required by the Constitution of the party, aspirants for top positions are vetted by CEC before their names are presented to NEC, which then forwards them to the National Conference. I am happy to report that His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was vetted unopposed, having been nominated unopposed,” NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong said of Museveni’s and Kigongo’s endorsements.
“Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, too, was vetted and endorsed unopposed. Their sole candidatures reflect the overwhelming confidence of the party in their ability to provide consistent and tested leadership.”
Compared to the earlier list of NRM CEC candidates previously published by The Pearl Times Here, the lists of candidates are now leaner.
But the race for NRM vice chairperson for Western Uganda remains crowded even when some candidates like President Yoweri Museveni’s younger brother Sedrack Nzaire Nowomugisha have pulled out of the contest.
Also worth noting is that some candidates have refused to step down despite calls by president Museveni, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairman.
The most prominent case is that of former speaker Rebecca Kadaga Alitwala and incumbent speaker Anita Annet Among Magogo.
Both candidates, vying for the second national vice chairperson (female) position have insisted on staying in the race.
