Tanzania’s government has deported Activist Agather Atuhaire to Uganda. Atuhaire’s colleague Boniface Mwangi was deported to Kenya.
Boniface Mwabukusi, the President of the Tanganyika Law Society, has confirmed the deportation of Atuhaire and Mwangi to their respective countries.
In Boniface Mwabukusi’s Words…
“I have received reports from Adv. Emmanuel Ukashu assigned to handle this matter informing me that Mr. Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan journalist and human rights activist, and Ms. Agatha Atuhaire, a Ugandan journalist and advocate, who were detained at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, since 19th May 2025, have been deported to their respective countries.
It is alleged that Mr. Mwangi was arrested on the grounds of providing false information for purposes of entry into the territory, having arrived in Tanzania on 18th May 2025. Both individuals have been repatriated under the escort and supervision of officers from the Tanzania Immigration Services Department.
As advocates for human rights, constitutionalism, and the rule of law in the East African region, we are duty-bound to continue engaging our respective national and regional authorities to ensure adherence to the Constitutions, municipal laws, and binding regional and international legal instruments governing freedom of movement, expression, and protection of journalists and human rights defenders.
We reiterate the imperative of upholding the principles enshrined in the East African Community Treaty, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and other applicable instruments, to promote good governance, transparency, and accountability across the region.

“We can confirm that our Team Leader Agather Atuhaire has been arrested and detained by Tanzanian Police alongside Kenya’s Activist Boniface Mwangi,” said Agora in a short statement posted online on Monday.
“They were part of the East African Community (EAC) observer mission currently in Tanzania that had travelled to attend a court hearing involving Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.”
In the past 48 hours, Tanzania has been in the spotlight for blocking and reporting lawyers and activists who had come from East Africa and beyond to stand in solidarity with opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Lissu, the Chairman of the Chadema party, appeared before Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam on Monday, 19 May 2025.
He faces charges of treason, sedition and incitement. He was remanded until June 02.
Lissu flashed the party’s ‘two fingers’ sign and salute as he left court, telling them “it’s getting serious.” Chadema members at court chanted “No Reforms, No Election.”
Arrested on April 09 for demanding reforms ahead of general elections in October 2025, opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s treason charges are not bailable.
As The Pearl Times has reported, Tanzania’s Tindu Lissu faces similar charges like Dr Besigye who has been in prison since November 2024.
The Ugandan state under Museveni accuses Besigye of plotting to overthrow Museveni, and is pushing for a law to try him and other civilians in military courts controlled by Museveni and his son, also army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has vowed to hang Besigye.
