President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s government has announced the extension of the term of office for Local Council I (LC I) and Local Council II (LC II) Chairpersons and their committees.
Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi had the responsibility of issuing the announcement about a dozen days to the expiry of another extension issued midyear.
Issued in July 2024, the extension was expected to expire on December 30.
The 180-day extension will expire mid next year, after which another extension will replace it or elections will be held.
“Notice is hereby given to the general public, pursuant to Regulation 12(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations, that the term of office for administrative unit councils expiring on 30th December 2024, is extended for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from 31st December 2024,” the notice by My Minister Magyezi, which The Pearl Times has seen, read.
General Notice No. 2827 of 2024, under the provisions of Regulation 12 (d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations as stipulated in the Local Governments Act, Cap. 138, based on which the extension was made, means that the elections for LC One and Two Chairpersons and their committees could happen a year before the general elections in 2026 or even in that same year – or even after.
The Ministry of Local Government needs about Shs50bn to hold LC One and Two elections for about 10,595 parishes and 70,626 villages across the country.
