Newcastle United ended a 56 years’ wait to secure a first domestic trophy with a Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool at Wembley
Newcastle last won a major trophy in 1969 which was an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
Two classic goals from Newcastle United boyhood fan Dan Burn and Alexander Isak gave Newcastle a triumph for manager Eddie Howe and his players.
Liverpool have a week to curse following their knock out of the Champions League on penalties by Paris St-Germain in midweek, only managed to pull a goal back through substitute Federico Chiesa in injury time.
With the Carabao Cup in their hands Howe and his players have secured their place in Tyneside history.
Sitting in the sixth Position Newcastle United’s win at Wembley Stadium will have an impact on how clubs qualify for next season’s European competition, because the winners of the EFL Cup are rewarded with a place in the playoff stage of the UEFA Conference League.
However, if Newcastle finish in at least the top five in the Premier League table that earns them a spot in a UEFA competition next season their Conference League playoff place will instead go to the next-highest ranked team who have not qualified for UEFA competition via their league position.
Arne Slot conceded Liverpool were deservedly beaten as a result of a disappointing performance “Disappointing result, disappointing performance. So, completely different than I felt after the Paris Saint-Germain game. Losing twice in a row is something I think we do for the first time”.
“It was a tough week but it was also a week where we extended our lead [in the Premier League] to 12 points from it being 10, so it wasn’t all negative. But the last two were definitely not the way we wanted it to be”. He said.
“We were well aware of the history and we wanted to do the club proud. We wanted to score, we wanted to perform and we wanted to win”. Howe said.
Meanwhile the trophy came at the back of the international break as Burn celebrated his first England call-up.
