Buganda, Busoga and West Nile are the most populous sub regions of Uganda

Buganda, Busoga and West Nile are the most populous sub regions of Uganda, preliminary results from the National Population and Housing Census 2024 as released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) have indicated.

Buganda in central Uganda has about 11 million people (a population of 11,113,592 to be exact). It is followed by Busoga in eastern Uganda which has a population of 4.37 million (4,372,349 people to be exact).

In the third place is West Nile, which has a population of 3.899 people (up to 3,899,084 people to be exact).

In fourth place is Ankole in Western Uganda which has 3.6 million people (a population of 3,600,747 people to be exact).

Following closely in the fifth place among the most populous sub regions of Uganda is Tooro which has a population of 3.378 million people (3,378,840 people to be exact).

Following Tooro in sixth position is Bunyoro which has 2.79 million people (a population of 2,792,123 people to be exact). In the seventh position is Lango which has 2.567 million people (a population of 2,567,518 people).

This is followed by Teso in the eighth position. Teso has 2.46 million people (2,462,344 people to be exact).

After Teso is Bukedi, in ninth position, which has a population of about 2.376 million people or 2,376,744 people). In the 10th position, following Bukedi, is Elgon with 2.2 million people (a population of 2,216,221).

In the 11th position is Acholi, which has a population of two million (2,047,118 people). Acholi is followed, in the 12th position, by Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, which has 1.875 million people (a population of 1,875,834).

In the 13th position is Kigezi sub region, which has 1.779 million people (a population of 1,779,694). Karamoja sub region is the smallest number of people. It has 1.45 million people (a population of 1,452,838).

 You can see how many people live in Ugandan cities in 2024 as the country’s total population rises to 45.9 million people although President Yoweri Museveni was ‘shocked’ by the final census numbers Here, There and Over There.
