President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s deputy press secretary Faruk Kirunda has confirmed the death of his wife Gladys Aliyinza Kirunda.
Aliyinza died in a road accident on the morning of June 27, 2024, according to her husband Kirunda.
Aliyinza Kirunda was travelling with Yusuf Biita, her personal assistant, when the accident happened at Bukoova in Luuka District of Eastern Uganda. Biita, too, did not survive the accident. Both died instantly.
Their driver survived the accident but sustained life threatening injuries. The driver was rushed to Musana Health Centre in Kaliro Town for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicated that two vehicles, an Isuzu double cabin pickup truck and a truck registration number UAU 073G. The Isuzu double cabin pickup truck, in which Aliyinza, her personal assistant Biita and their driver were travelling in, overturned severally – and so did the truck.
“Dear relatives, friends and in-laws, with a very heavy heart, I announce the untimely death of my dear wife, Gladys Aliyinza, who passed on in an accident earlier today,” announced Kirunda.
“It’s a heavy blow on our young family and pray to Allah to see us through. Thanks to all of you for the outpouring of sympathy and support so far extended to us. Inalilahi wa inalilahi la juin!!”
Aliyinza Kirunda had her eyes on the Luuka District Woman MP seat, which she unsuccessfully contested in the 2021 parliamentary elections. Running as an independent candidate, Aliyinza managed 9,406 votes, losing to former presidency minister Esther Mbayo Mbulakubuza of President Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) who got 25,495 votes.
