At least 11 people were injured in a Gateway bus accident in Muhanga Town Council of Rukiga District along the Ntungamo-Kabale road.
The accident happened at about 6am on the morning of Sunday, May 25, 2025. It involved a Gateway Bus, registration number UBM 707X which was returning from Kampala.
The bus lost contro, veered into a trench and overturned at Rwabahazi Cell, Muhanga Ward, in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District.
Several passengers sustained injuries. The number of people on board was not readily known but reports put the figure between 40 and 60 by the time of the accident.
There was no death recorded but a woman who happened to be walking on the roadside when the accident happed sustained serious injuries.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate said the injured were first rushed to Rotom Health Center. Those who were seriously injured were then transferred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
The injured were identified as Karim Balabye, the driver, aged 54, from Bugembe in Jinja District; Assumpta Kyomuhangi, aged 40,a businesswoman from Wakiso District; Ronnie Nowamaani, aged 18, a student from Wakiso District; Blaire Nowamaani, 14, from Kabale; Brandon Nowembabazi, 11, from Kabale and Dafroza Rwakinda Tumushabe, aged 77, a resident of Nyakabungo Cell, Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga District.
Others were: Patience Busingye, 49, from Kampala; Benson Kiconco, 55, from Kampala; Paulson Asiimwe, 40, from Rubanda; Tracy Ninsiima, 21, from Muhanga Town Council; and Richard Bashiisha, 34, from Rwanda.
The bus was towed to Rukiga Central Police Station. It will be examined by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).
Accidents have raised road safety concerns in Uganda, with activists calling for more to be done so as to reduce on the loss of lives and injuries associated with crashes.
Days ago, the ministry of transport suspended YY Coaches after its bus caught fire, among a string of other accidents.
Last week, 13 people, most of them clan members, were killed in an accident as they returned from a kwanjula, while yesterday former minister Kiwanda was involved in an accident. (See Details Here and There).
