Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango
Kampala Metropolitan Police has arrested 10 people over Makerere University student Emmanuel Tegu’s death, spokesperson Patrick Onyango has said.
Onyango noted that police made the arrests after it “carried out an intelligence-led operation.”
The operation established that the 10 took part in the mob action in which Tegu, a third year veterinary student, sustained injuries.
Tegu died at Mulago Hospital at the weekend, almost a week after the incident that happened near Makerere University’s Lumumba Hall.
“All the suspects are residents of Makerere University in Kampala,” Onyango added.
“They are detained at Wandegeya Police Station pending interrogation.”
The KMP publicist also revealed that police is hunting more suspects who “took off after receiving information of the death of the student.”
Earlier, police spokesperson Fred Enanga, speaking at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, had put the number of arrested suspects at seven.
But police later issued a statement revising the number from seven to 10.
At the weekend, the Justice for Tegu campaign trended online.
Some called for the disbanding of guards under the Local Defence Unit (LDUs) reserve force.
Police insists the LDUs didn’t participate in the mob action.
