Uganda Police Force (UPF) officers have arrested striking doctors who were marching to Parliament to deliver their petition to Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.
Members of the Uganda Medical Association (Uma) and the Federation of Uganda Medical Interns (Fumi) were part of at least 30 health workers in the protest.
For weeks now, members of Uma and Fumi have been on strike demanding pay enhancement and equipment of facilities, among other demands.
Recently, the ministry of health fired striking intern doctors.
Today, the striking interns and doctors were arrested and detained at the Kampala Central Police Station (CPS).
Uma condemned the arrest. The association said the arrests were an act of shamelessness.
“It saddens to kneel and beg for better healthcare in a country where we strive to save lives every day. Arresting our leaders is embarrassing, you may not be ready for the repercussions,” said Uma in a statementl.
“Detaining Doctors that save lives, who were having a peaceful march is shameful. Ministry of Health leaders and Police have no shame.”
