Speaking after the General Court Martial based in Makindye remanded opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye to Luzira Prison until January 07, 2025, Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu sent a message to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reminding him that no government is permanent.
In the room hosting military court, which Besigye’s defence team refused to recognize as a court but kept referring to it as a tribunal, a number of lawyers defending the politician and his colleague Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya had no seats.
Counsel Eron Kiiza had some bitter exchanges with the judge advocate and the prosecutor. The Besigye legal team said it it could not proceed without Martha Karua who the suspects chose as their lead counsel but has been denied a practicing certificate by the Uganda Law Council.
After the military tribunal adjourned to January 05, Gen Mugisha Muntu used an address to the media to send a message to Gen Museveni reminding him and all those in public and military service who think they are powerful and untouchable that governments and regimes come and go.
Muntu, the leader of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), gave an example of Syria where rebels ousted Bashar al-Assad at the weekend, ending the half century Assad dynasty and its reign of terror.
Assad and his family fled to Russia. Gen Muntu reminded Ugandans of the law of accumulative effect, encouraging them that as day follows night, the Museveni regime would soon end.
He also condemned the abduction of Besigye’s lawyer (which the military court seemed to treat casually when counsel Kiiza reported it). Read more on the abduction of Besigye’s lawyer Here.
Also appearing in court was Senior counsel Martha Karua who later told the press she would keep pushing for a practicing certificate. Read her response to the law council rejection letter Here.
