Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha has appeared in the Nakawa Magistrate Court days after she was filmed assaulting a traffic police officer on duty at Lugogo traffic lights on October 18, 2024.
State prosecution preferred charges of assault, attempted simple robbery of an EPS machine, failure to comply with the police officers directives, careless driving and driving with an expired insurance against Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha.
According to police, on October 18, 2024, at around 11:55 AM, the traffic police officer from Jinja Road Police Station attempted to stop a white Toyota Land Cruiser registration number UBM 439T, driven by a one Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha who had allegedly caused an accident.
“Despite his signals, the motorist is said to have refused to stop and continued driving while using her phone. After catching up at Lugogo Traffic Lights, it is alleged that she parked at the Uganda Manufacturers Association and locked her vehicle,” police said in a statement.
“Our officer asked for her driving permit. She is said to have resorted to intimidation of the officer and later assaulted him. She went further to confiscate the police EPS gadget two phones belonging to the police officer.”
Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha has been remanded by the Nakawa Magistrate Court until November 4, 2024, meaning she will spend the next 13 days in prison.

“He demonstrated remarkable dedication to his responsibilities, and we have received numerous reports praising his enthusiasm and commitment to duty,” said Rusoke.
“I would like to convey the Inspector General of Police’s message of appreciation for his patriotic spirit and further convey the message that his positive attitude will be recognized and rewarded.”
It should be remembered that Minister Kahinda Otaffire, who is responsible for police affairs, recently said his heart bleeds over the low salaries and bad working conditions of police officers.
