Kenyan President Dr William Samoei Ruto has backed a proposal by Ugandan first son and military general Muhoozi Kainerugaba for Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni to become the leader of the regional East African Community (EAC).
Hours before he was fired as Commander Land Forces and elevated from the rank of Lieutenant General to a full general, Muhoozi had hinted on his father Gen Museveni becoming the president of the East African Federation.
Muhoozi had suggested that role of Chief of Defence Forces of the EAC be reserved for him.
“After we create our East African Federation. President Museveni will be President, Afande Ruto will be Vice President, My brother Uhuru will be Foreign Affairs Minister. I just want to be CDF of the East African forces,” he wrote on October 04.
Opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine warned progressive nations against joining the East African Federation with Museveni and Muhoozi on the steering wheel.
“How Gen Museveni and his family view the East African Community project! They pay lip service to integration when the real intention is personal ambition. Progressive nations wouldn’t be part. Federation shall only happen when we agree on a set of values that we all respect!” said Bobi Wine.
But, surprisingly, President Ruto, the newly elected fifth president of the Republic of Kenya, who Muhoozi said should be the Vice President of the East African Federation, seems to support Museveni’s leadership of the EAC. Today, Ruto has publicly expressed his backing for Museveni to lead the EAC integration.
Ruto was speaking the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds where he was a guest as Uganda celebrated her 60th Independence Anniversary.
The Kenyan President said Gen Museveni was advanced in age and had great experience, making it clear to him that he is the right man to shoulder the responsibility of uniting and leading the EAC.
He also called for the transformation of borders that affect trade and interaction between East Africans, emphasizing the need to share opportunity and prosperity as well as fighting hunger and poverty.
“With age and experience comes responsibility; you [Museveni] have both; take responsibility and lead the charge. President Museveni is our elder and experienced leader. We look up to him now to take charge in efforts to remove the borders that separate us as the people of the East African Community and Africa,” said Ruto.
“It’s up to us as leaders to work towards transforming our boundaries which act as barriers into bridges to facilitate the movement of our people.”
