Police has warned all school administrators against using saloon cars to transport learners — pupils and students.
The warning was sounded by ASP Faridah Nampiima, the spokesperson of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety at the Uganda Police Force, while addressing reporters in Kampala on March 07.
ASP Nampiima said police will soon start impounding the saloon vehicles being used as school vans, and penalizing administrators and drivers.
“School operators who are using saloon cars as school vans and overload children yet such vehicles are not licensed for this duty are strongly warned to stop it with immediate effect,” said Nampiima.
“Traffic police will impound these vehicles and inconvenience children and the parents which both of us would have avoided.”
She also announced that 414 accidents happened in the past one week, from February 28 to March 06.
Some 75 of these accidents were fatal, 226 serious while 113 were minor. A total of 89 people died while 315 sustained injuries.
The highest number of deaths was registered in Kampala where nine people were killed; Mbarara where eight people died; Mityana Highway seven, and Greater Bushenyi six.
